The Catalina Islands are famous for the clarity of their waters and the quality of their dives, they are also known for having some of the most consistent and accessible dive sites in Costa Rica. Located in the North Pacific Ocean, they belong to the province of Guanacaste.

 

With fantastic underwater visibility, it is possible to observe a large amount of marine life with Mantas, Mobulas, and Punta Blanca Sharks being the preferred species for divers. The best season is from December to July, however, quality dives are offered all year round.

It is recommended to bring a towel, water shoes, and sun protection.

Dive sites and marine life:

In the Catalina Islands, we have a large number of dive sites with many different conditions for divers of all levels. The most outstanding sites are: "El Clásico", "Los Sombreros" and "Punta Sur", although all the sites are fascinating. This archipelago presents a seabed of volcanic origin with more than 20 islands and rock formations, where we can observe giant mantas, mobulas, rays of different species, white tip sharks, schools of jacks, moray eels, and seahorses. The average visibility is 18 to 20 meters during the year, water temperatures range from 22-30 °C (70-86 °F).  

 

About the tour:

The experience begins by preparing the equipment and leaving Playa Flamingo with everything ready. The boat ride is approximately 40 minutes depending on the sea conditions.  Many times during the navigation we observe various marine species such as turtles, dolphins, and in season humpback whales. Once on the island, we will pay attention to the currents and prevailing conditions to make two dives in the best available sites.

 

For the surface interval we offer drinks and snacks on the boat. At the end of the last dive, the captain will navigate at the best possible angle to photograph the beautiful scenery of the islands, and then continue our tour back to the shores of Playa Flamingo.
