Isla del Caño

We offer a full-day trip to Caño Island. Named one of the best diving destinations in Costa Rica, the Caño Island Biological Reserve is home to a great variety of tropical fish, whales, and sharks.

Located in the beautiful Pacific Ocean, about 30 km off the coast of the Osa Peninsula, it is part of the province of Puntarenas. Caño Island is considered of great geographic and archaeological importance. With fantastic underwater visibility, it is possible to observe a large number of marine species during most of the year, although the best season extends from December to June.

The tour includes:

- Caño Island  Biological Reserve entry fees;

- Full diving and snorkeling equipment;

- 2 tank immersions;

- PADI Instructor or DM;

- Drinks, snacks, and full lunch on board;

- Departure from Bahia Ballena in Uvita at 7:30 am, return at 3pm;

Non-Certified Divers:

If you are interested in joining our expedition, and you want to dive without being certified,  we offer the possibility of doing a Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) Experience. For this, you would need to join us on an introductory pool session and class a day previous to the expedition. There you will learn all the basics and essential techniques to safely explore the underwater world under the direct supervision of a PADI Instructor. Very importantly, this is not a dive certification.

What to bring to the expedition?

It is recommended to bring a towel, water shoes or sandals, sun protection, a rain jacket depending on the season, and any personal diving/snorkel gear (optional).

About the Tour:

Departing from Marino Ballena National Park early in the morning, most of the trip will be spent navigating along the South Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

The trip to the island takes approximately 1 hour 10 minutes, depending on weather conditions. Once we arrive at our destination, we will make two dives at different sites, depending on the prevailing conditions on the island.

Between dives, drinks and snacks are offered on the boat. After the last dive/snorkel, a good Costa Rican lunch is planned to continue with our return to the shores of Bahia Ballena.

About our Boat:

We cruise on a 31 ft Speed boat with 2  x Suzuki 200HP, fully equipped with dive tank racks and forward-facing seats to ensure the comfort of our guests during the passage to the island.

Also available on board, VHF/GPS  floating radio, Coast Guard-approved life vests, complete first aid kit, and an Emergency oxygen kit for extended care.

Additionally to this, we have accessible dry storage and a cooler available for any personal belongings or food/drinks.

Dive sites and marine life:

Caño Island has a series of exceptional dive sites with different characteristics. Among the following, we can highlight "Bajo del Diablo", "El Barco", "El Ancla" and "La Cueva". The sites near the island present a topography of volcanic origin, which is home to the most diverse reefs in the country. During the dives, it is common to observe whitetip sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, mobulas, seahorses, large schools of barracuda, and other species of fish. Generally, from the boat, we can observe dolphins, turtles and, during migration season, spectacular humpback whales. The average annual visibility is 12 to 30 meters (40 to 100 ft), the average water temperature is 28°C (74°F).
