Snorkeling - Isla del Caño

Named as one of the best diving spots in Costa Rica, the Caño Island Biological Reserve is also home to a great variety of fish, whales and sharks.

Located in the beautiful Pacific Ocean, about 30 km off the coast of the Osa Peninsula, it is part of the province of Puntarenas. Caño Island is considered of great geographic and archaeological importance. With fantastic underwater visibility, it is possible to observe a large number of marine species during most of the year, although the best season extends from December to June.

Dive sites and marine life:

Caño Island has a series of exceptional dive sites with different characteristics. Among the following, we can highlight "Bajo del Diablo", "El Barco", "El Ancla" and "La Cueva". The sites near the island present a topography with a bottom of volcanic origin, which gives home to the most diverse coral reefs in the country.

During the dives, it is common to observe whitetip sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, mobulas, seahorses, large schools of barracuda, and other species of fish. Generally, from the boat, we can observe dolphins, turtles and during migration season humpback whales. The average annual visibility is 12 to 30 meters, the average water temperature is 28°C (74°F).

About the Tour:

Departing from Marino Ballena National Park early in the morning, most of the trip will be spent sailing along the South Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

The tour lasts approximately 80 minutes, depending strictly on weather conditions. During the tour, we may encounter various marine species such as turtles or cetaceans (dolphins and whales). Once on the island, we will snorkel in two different spots, depending on the prevailing conditions on the island.

Between snorkels, drinks and snacks are offered on the boat. After the last snorkel, a good lunch is planned to continue with our return to the shores of Bahia Ballena.
